Introduction to the Westies
The West Highland White Terrier, known as ‘The Westie’ has competed at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show since 1906 and won Best in Show twice!
(First in 1942 and again in1962.)
To Scotty, his Westies are always ‘Best in Show’ as their Westies are the happiest, most loving, and fun dogs they have ever had.
The 'Westie' is one of the most popular of the terrier breeds as they are smart, easy to train and make wonderful family pets.
Westies are very affectionate to their human family members, however, they can be more reluctant around strangers, small children and small animals. They are very social and love being around people, but because of their hunting instincts, small children might not be a great fit for the easily excitable Westie.
HISTORY
The West Highland White Terriers originated in Scotland and were used for hunting foxes, badgers, otters and killing vermins such as rats.
WHAT IS A WESTIE?

Males 15 -22 lbs., (7-10 kg)
- Temperament: Friendly, alert, inquisitive, independent, cheerful, active, hardy, affectionate, happy, courageous, and humorous.
TRAINING YOUR WESTIE
While this inquisitive, independent and loving breed makes a good family pet and playmate; it should be noted their determination can require patience and firmness while training.
(Obviously, they have to be determined and tough to be willing to hunt underground for a fox, rat, or badger.)
However, it is well worth the extra effort to train this brave, little breed because their devotion is amazing!
DO WESTIES BARK A LOT?
Tell your Westie "NO" if they continuously bark. They are very intelligent dogs who will learn your commands very easily.
Be firm- make sure your Westie isn't bored or trying to communicate with you. Be aware they will bark to warn or alert you, however, once you've investigated why they are barking, teach them it is 'OK' now and it is time to stop barking.
Reaffirm they did well by praising your Westie because they are excellent watchdogs.
Do not try to discourage your Westies' natural dog instinct, but rather TEACH your Westie that you will honor its' bark and it is OK now NOT TO BARK.
You can also teach your Westie 'too bark' on command and this truely does help to get them to stop barking.
